OUR STORYOur owners Dan Myers and Vernon Meyer first met in 2015. Dan was part owner of a business that was working with Vernon's business Heartland Payment Systems. Dan and Vernon were having a business lunch at a local restaurant, when the conversation turned to dreams and the subject of owning a wine bar came up. Vernon had desires to own a wine bar since being introduced to wine country in 2013. It only enhanced when he visited a place in Omaha called Brix. After Dan and Vernon's lunch, the idea intrigued Dan and would eventually come across an opportunity to purchase a long time Sioux City restaurant named Luciano's.
On August 1, 2016, Dan and Vernon became the official owners of Luciano's. Dan and Vernon would meet several times to begin planning and purchasing the longtime business. With Dan's extensive business expertise and Vernon's wine background, both knew they needed someone who had fine dining experience. Dan and Vernon conducted several interviews, but Chef Melis had both management and the back of house knowledge that would fill both voids. Once Chef Melis was hired, the group made the decision that a name change would ultimately need to be made. With both owners last name ended in "M" and Chef Melis having "M" in her name, the new name M's on 4th was born! M's on 4th is a vibrant restaurant, has a martini bar, a wine shop "M's Uncorked," and a cellar called "M's Underground." Each part of the business offers a unique experience, but one thing is consistant: great service, great food, great wine and great experience.
OUR OWNERSDan Myers and Vernon Meyer are both Siouxland natives. Dan has lived/worked in Sioux City all but 2 years of his life, while Vernon grew up in Lytton, IA where he came to Sioux City to attend Morningside College in 1987. Both have a passion for serving their community. Both are devoted family men, have served on boards of non-profits, both have a love for golf and camping. Despite rumors, they are not related! :)
DAN MYERSI am a Sioux City native and have lived all but two years of my life in Sioux City. I have been involved in a variety of businesses, but spent much of my career as an owner/operator of long-term care facilities. A few short years ago I became involved with Ragazzi's Pizza in Omaha. While many might wonder how someone would make the transition from long-term care to restaurants, it is actually pretty simple. Hospitality is hospitality and customer service is customer service. Throw in some lessons learned at the school of hard knocks, and good things can happen.
When I heard that Luciano's might be available, my interest piqued immediately. It is located on a great corner in a great and historic part of Sioux City. The food was always outstanding and like many other businesses, needed a new fresh approach. With Vernon and Melis, M's on 4th has a great new vibrancy and a sharp focus on serving the guest with an outstanding dining experience and an opportunity to enjoy some wine from our vast selection.
Ann and I met in high school, dated for 6 years (with a little bit of a break) and have been married for 32 years. We have 5 children, 4 grandkids, a son-in-law, and 2 daughters-in-law.
VERNON MEYERI grew up in a town of just over 300 people called Lytton, IA. I earned my BS degree from Westmar University in 1993. I have spent most of my career in the non-profit sector, but was fortunate enough to be a wine and beverage director for HyVee for 8 years and worked in the hospitality industry when I was in college. I have always wanted to own my own business, but the opportunity and/or timing were not aligned. So when Dan asked me to consider becoming his partner in the business, I was extremely humbled and thankful! When I look at our leadership team of Dan, Chef Melis, and I, we all have strengths that provide an amazing blend of knowledge.
I am excited to able to create a fantastic venue for the Siouxland community. We have a great staff, who have a desire to truly take care of our guests. It's truly a dream come true for me; and to be able to have Dan as a business partner, and Chef Melis as our GM only enhances that dream. My hope is that everyone who enters M's on 4th will feel valued and will experience a fun, relaxed atmosphere. When life becomes hectic and people are looking for a place to have a great dinner, a martini, or a glass of wine, I want M's on 4th to be at the top of the list!
I have been married for 23 years (Aileen), and have 3 daughters, Corinne, Paige, and Jenna. (That's alot of estrogen!) :)
OUR GENERAL MANAGER
MELIS SPENCERMelis Spencer earned a degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, before returning "home" to the midwest to begin building a career. Working for WR restaurant group, the management company overseeing Minerva's and Kahill's, led to working for several years as a Sous Chef. A move to Lincoln, Nebraska opened up a unique opportunity to pursue a position as Executive Pastry Chef at the Marriot, downtown Lincoln, and then Venue Restaurant and Lounge that opened in 2003. After several years of honing her skills at breads and desserts, the desire to learn additional dimensions of the food service and hospitality industry led to a food marketing position with Sysco Lincoln. While learning so much about procurement and marketing, she found herself longing to once again be a part of a restaurant management team, and at the same time, the plans for Eldon's fine dining concept were about to be put into action in late 2009. The beloved Eldon's restaurant closed in 2014, and she has since been an adjunct culinary instructor at Western Iowa Tech Community College, Executive Chef at Blue Mountain Smokehouse Grill in Orange City, IA, and Executive Chef at Briar Cliff University.
Melis is one of the founding and active members of the American Culinary Federation of Siouxland (ACF), along with other area chefs and culinarians, and continues to adjunct as an instructor as WITCC for the culinary program.
Melis brings her multi-faceted experience to M's on 4th to elevate and enhance the food and menu, but also the level of guest service and overall dining experience. Her passion for "from scratch" cooking, using natural, fresh foods, is the driving force in the kitchen, and her desire is to have every guest in the dining room feel like they have been welcomed to a friend's home for dinner.
She shares her life with her husband Scott and their three young sons. During family time together they enjoy activities like camping & hiking, attending community events, and building projects with Legos. Melis also has a love for art, music, singing, wine, and chocolate!
